Ethinylestradiol is a synthetic oestrogen used as menopausal hormone replacement therapy, also to treat female hypogonadism and in breast cancer and prostate cancer.
It is prescribed for the treatment of:
• Hormone replacement therapy
• Post menopausal osteoporosis
• Palliative treatment of breast or prostatic cancer
• Contraception
As advised by the physician.
It should be taken orally.
Ethinylestradiol is chemically and biologically identical to human oestradiol and works by substituting for the loss of estrogen production in menopausal women and alleviates menopausal symptoms. It is also used as part of combined oral contraceptive.
Inform the physician if the patient is allergic to the active ingredients and any other drugs. Brief about the allergy and the signs like:
• Rash
• Itching
• Shortness of breath
• Swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat or any other signs.
The patient should tell the doctor about any history of :
• Endometriosis
• Thromboembolic disorders
• Hypertension
• Diabetes mellitus
• Migraine
• Epilepsy
• Asthma
• Otosclerosis
• Gall bladder disease

Uterine, liver, mammary carcinoma, thromboembolic disorders, pregnancy, lactation, untreated endometriosis, jaundice
Report to the physician immediately if the patients are having any of these following symptoms:
• Edema
• Hypertension

• Disturbance of menstrual cycle
• Breast changes
• Appetite/weight changes
• Depression
• Alteration in libido
• Rashes
• Alopoecia
• Hirsutism
• Gynaecomastia
• Endometrial cancer

Consumption of alcohol is not advisable.
Contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.

Levonorgestrel is a potent inhibitor of ovulation and has androgenic activity, used as a contraceptive and in hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Levonorgestrel is prescribed for the treatment of menopausal and postmenopausal disorders and alone or in combination with other hormones as an oral contraceptive.

According to the dosage forms the following routes of administartion are available:
• Oral
• Intrauterine
Levonorgestrel binds to the progesterone and estrogen receptors. Target cells include the female reproductive tract, the mammary gland, the hypothalamus, and the pituitary. Once bound to the receptor, progestins like levonorgestrel will slow the frequency of release of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus and blunt the pre-ovulatory LH (luteinizing hormone) surge.
Should be taken in patients having:
• Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
• Severe arterial disease
• Liver adenoma
• Porphyria
• History of breast cancer
• Hepatic impairment

• Menstrual irregularities
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Breast discomfort
• Gynaecomastia
• Depression
• Skin disorders
• Disturbance of appetite
• Weight changes
• Fluid retention
• Oedema
• Changes in libido
• Cholestatic jaundice
• Hair loss or hirsutism
• Benign intracranial hypertension
• Thrombocytopenic purpura
